Now tools must make 10 separate requests to track 100 positions. Most aren't bothering. They're prioritizing the first 20-30 results instead. Your tool shows improved average position because it's literally tracking fewer positions.
That top-10 average position for your domain? It's not necessarily accurate. It's an artifact of measurement methodology changing without updating how we interpret the data.
Bot Traffic Vanishes From Reports
Here's where it gets interesting. That 100-result parameter wasn't just used by SEO tools. Bots, scrapers, and automated systems used it extensively. Displaying 100 results per page was efficient for programmatic access. Requiring 10 separate page loads for the same data is not.

Position data in GSC is also more reliable because Google knows the actual position served to each user query. They're not estimating based on sample crawls. But even GSC average position has limitations. It's the average of all positions served across all queries, which can fluctuate wildly based on query volume for specific terms.

Focus on impression trends over time rather than absolute position numbers. If impressions are growing while average position "improves," you're likely seeing measurement artifacts. If impressions are growing while position holds steady, that's genuine expansion of keyword rankings.
What This Means for Competitive Analysis
Competitive rank tracking just became significantly harder. When you're comparing your rankings to competitors, you're now comparing estimates based on limited data rather than comprehensive tracking.
That competitor who supposedly ranks better than you across 500 keywords? Maybe. Or maybe the tool's sample of positions 1-30 is overweighting their strong performers and underweighting their weak ones. You're seeing a curated view, not a complete picture.
Tools that charge based on keyword tracking are particularly affected. You're paying for 1,000 keywords tracked, but the tool is effectively prioritizing the first 200-300 and spot-checking the rest. The value proposition changed without the pricing changing.
Calibrating Your Expectations
Stop celebrating improved average position without investigating why it improved. Check impression trends, click trends, and actual traffic. If all three are growing, congratulations—you're genuinely improving. If only position improved, you're seeing measurement artifacts.
Be skeptical of dramatic average position improvements (like jumping from 15 to 8) that happen suddenly. Google's algorithm changes are typically gradual. Tool methodology changes are often abrupt.
Recognize that position tracking is becoming a directional indicator rather than a precise measurement. You're in the top 10, the top 20, or the top 50. The specific number matters less than the trend over time.
Use Google Search Console as your source of truth for actual impressions and clicks. Third-party tools are valuable for keyword discovery, competition analysis, and trend spotting. But they're increasingly estimates rather than measurements.
The New Normal for Rank Tracking
We're returning to an era where search visibility is harder to quantify precisely. Tools are less comprehensive. Data is more fragmented. Attribution is murkier. This isn't temporary. This is the new baseline.
Your average position might look fantastic. Your impressions might be steady. Your traffic might be declining. All three can be simultaneously true because they're measuring different things through different methodologies that changed at different times.
The marketers who succeed are those who stop obsessing over individual metrics and start looking at holistic patterns. Impression trends plus click trends plus traffic trends plus conversion trends create a narrative. Any single metric in isolation is increasingly meaningless.
